GIANT-MAN & THE WASP. 2017.
Gouache on illustration board, 9 × 12″.

The 3D head reference was provided by the Handy app on my phone, while the inspiration was courtesy of Don Heck. While the head was the only lighting reference I had, that was enough to extrapolate to the Wasp's entire figure.

Memorial Day

MYTHOS: CAPTAIN AMERICA, Page 10, Panel 1. 2008.
Gouache and acrylic on bristol board, 11 × 17″.

Repost from 2014

It's Memorial Day here in the States, so I thought I'd share some artwork that pays homage to those who have fallen in the service of our country. Although I was not much of a Captain America fan growing up, I've since had the privilege of working on two stories that turned me into one. The first, Mythos: Captain America, was written by Paul Jenkins. The second, Young Allies, was written by Roger Stern. Both stories had their share of action, but the heart of each was the loss of friends in the midst of bigger battles.

It's a bit overwhelming to visit a vast, military cemetery, even if you don't have a personal connection to those laid to rest. Drawing one can't begin to approach a family's sense of loss for a loved one, but it does, at the very least, force you to deliberate over the life that each gravestone represents.

WONDER WOMAN 75TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL. 2017.
Acryla Gouache on sketch cover, 7 × 10.5″.

I don't typically like painting on sketch covers, but I'm always happy to do so for the Hero Initiative. They'll be auctioning this piece for charity on May 27 at the Phoenix Comic Con. You can see this (and the rest of the covers) at the Hero Initiative site. And if that weren't exciting enough, here's me posing with my very own Lasso of Truth!

Dark Knight, Comics Culture, & Appearances

THE DARK KNIGHT (detail of raw scan). 2017.
Gouache on watercolor block, 9 × 12″.

Thanks so much to everyone who stopped by my table at Comic Con Revolution! It was a great show and I hope to be back in the future. Here is one of the 7 pre-commissions I completed (I wasn't able to get to a few of them, as it was just a 1-day show).

While I have your attention, here is a recent interview I had with Terence Dollard of Comics Culture. During our discussion, I gave a work-in-progress peek at the Cap/Iron Man commission that I was working on. Hope you enjoy!

Lastly, I've been getting a ton of questions about commissions and appearances, so I think I'm going to create an email newsletter to help keep people up to date. I'll be sure to post when that launches. In the meantime, my tentative (and totally unconfirmed) schedule for the rest of the year is as follows:

Wizard World Sacramento
June 16-18

StocktonCon
September 1-3

New York Comic Con
October 5-8

Have a great weekend!

I'll be at Comic Con Revolution this Saturday in Ontario, CA. All my commission spots have been taken, but I'll be happy to sign your books. I'll also have copies of my Modern Masters book to sell. It's just a one-day show, so I'll be at my table as much as possible. Hope to see you there!

Readers of this blog will probably find this piece familiar. Don't think I ever posted the reference for it, but I could be wrong. After all, it's been almost 10 years since I started this thing.

VISION. 2017. Gouache on paper, 9 × 12″.

This was in the batch of commissions I recently finished from NYCC last year. (I'm perpetually behind.) I used several kinds of reference to get just what I was looking for.

On the left is a picture of me at my desk (pardon the man-bun). Second is the classic panel by John Buscema from Avengers #58. Next up is a lighting rig courtesy of Handy, an art reference app. And finally, my own anatomy sculpture in Sculptris.
